My only slight criticism would be "as he engineered a record-breaking last minute comeback for the Loiners."
The last minute of that game will be remembered more for another player recently sadly passed (Derek Noonan) dropping the ball with the line at his mercy. There was cover defence in the corner but Noonan ended up over the line only without the ball.'"
Noonan won the Lance Todd IIRC.

Are you confusing 'good old Derek Noonon' (as Phil Cookson called him after the game) with 'good old Don Fox' as every Leeds fan called him in '68.

I understand the story was something like the LT vote was taken around 10 mins before the end of the game, with Saints in front and looking likely to hang on to the victory.
Then a certain Mr Holmes and his mates decided they weren't going have any of that ....
And as you say, with the match in it's dying seconds there was a slip pass to Derek Noonan with the line beckoning, which would have won the game for Saints. He dropped the ball and the rest, as they say, was history ....
Hence George Nicholls being named Lance Todd winner on the losing side.

| An excellent piece.
As an regular attendee of the ex players annual dinner I met John several times and he was a true gentleman. I am sure this years dinner will be very poignant.

| I was sat with john at the 'lions' annual dinner a couple of years ago when george nicholls was presented with an award, I mentioned the 78 lance todd and what an injustice it was, John told of how the press apologised to him afterwards, that was good enough for him, no regrets or hard feelings. A shrug of the shoulders.

Total legend a gent and leeds rlfc through and through! Genuinley moved by his passing and feel very privileged to see him play and to have pestered him to sign mi program and nick his tie ups.
